‘Midwives’ by Chris Bohjalian is a thought-provoking novel centered on a Midwife named Sybil Danforth, and her battle with the legal system to prove her innocence. Much like all the other works by Chris Bohjalian, Midwives focuses on a crucial ethical issue involved in the field of Midwifery and the immense amount responsibility they shoulder.
Most of characters are ordinary people who battles with difficulties that are out of ordinary and encompass a huge component involving the characters going through a major internal conflict that eventually enables them to find their own voice. However, how the aforementioned facets apply to the protagonist of Midwives will be further elaborated as the substance of the prose progresses. (Thiroux, 2008)
