Abnormality can exist across all facets of one’s personality. According to early studies conducted by researchers and psychologists, sexuality has been closely linked with abnormality. Paraphillias is a sub-classification of sexual disorders in the DSM-IV TR that is characterized by perversions and deviances from normal sexual conduct and includes Frotteurism, Voyeurism, Fetishism, Pedophilia, Sexual Masochism and Sadism, Transvestic Fetishism and Vaginismus (Fagan, 2004, Pp 2).
1. What aspects of sexuality should be considered criminal acts? Try to define these crimes and what type of punishment they should receive?
Homosexuality has been largely perceived as a disorder; however, it should be acknowledged that it is an individual preference and cannot be considered as a pathological behavior. However, sexual deviances such as pedophilia, voyeurism, exhibitionism, incest and bestiality involve behavior that is directed towards non-consenting partners and are hence punishable by law. The most obvious punishment is incarceration and counseling, but that does not eradicate the problem. A more logical punishment would be to castrate the offender and then give counseling to help him cope with the negative emotional impact of castration. Pee Wee Herman’s actions were appalling, but considering the fact that he was caught in an adult movie theatre that was the most obvious physiological response. And since, his offence did not harm anyone else, in such a case the only logical punishment for him was to be let go after being reprimanded for his actions (Johnson, 2004, Pp 80).
