Essay: The Psychological Analysis of “I Am Sam”
In the movie “I am Sam”, Sean Penn (Sam) played a role of autistic father who faces difficulties in bringing up his daughter, Lucy Diamond Dawson (Dakota Fanning) because of his mental disabilities. Sam finds it hard to help Lucy in her academic learning due to his verbal and communication problems.
He is challenged by Mr. Turner in the court, who claims that Sam’s mental disability would be a hindrance in his child’s learning process. Sam loves her daughter a lot like every father loves. He fails to prove his ability to take care of his child because autistic people are distant in nature and due to this reason they are unable to convey their thoughts and feelings to others. Mr. Turner wins the case against him due to his weakness. As a result the daughter is taken to the foster home. Rita is Sam’s lawyer who after this incidence helps Sam flourish in his career. Randy is introduced as lady who wants to adopt Lucy but later seeing the love of father and child she gives up with this idea, Sam gets his daughter back.
